Recently my family and I took a trip up to Boothbay Harbor, Maine in the middle of winter. We ventured up to Maine in the winter once before in February 2020. Throughout childhood and as an adult I've spent a lot of time in the state of Maine and we love it up there!
I was fortunate to have the opportunity to paint en plein air at Hendrick's Head Beach for about an hour. Here is a video showing much of that process. I do frequently daydream of living in Maine and frequently painting the beautiful scenery there. This trip was a wonderful gift in that sense and for many other reasons.
The change of scenery, staying in an Air BnB cabin, exploring and quieter evenings hanging out as a family were rejuvenating. It was nice to capture a voluminous amount of reference material too! Here is one small painting that I recently pulled together from some of the photos and videos we captured.
The following painting was inspired by our trip too. While this scene is more reminiscent of the types of scenes you might see on some of the lakes we have in Pennsylvania or Northern New Jersey, the notion of painting a nautical scene definitely was aminated by the Maine experience.
One day we hope to take residence there but for now the memories of trips up there as a child and more recently as an adult, with both friends and family, will certainly help fuel some waves of creative inspiration.
Next up some dog portraits! There's been a bit of a wave of commission requests so we will chew on those for a bit and get back to landscape paintings as soon as possible.
Cheers!
