Recently I built a Super-Simple Low Cost Lightweight Palette Box that requires no fancy power tools to build and can be assembled in less than an hour.
After several months of using the palette box in the field while painting en Plein air under all kinds of conditions, I felt I’d share my experience for the benefit of those fellow artists who would like a simple, low cost option.

Materials List for lightweight pallet box:
11” x 16” cradled wood panels (3) - $24.99 https://a.co/d/g1ENhhE
Torque Hinges (3) - $8.99 https://a.co/d/gY07EvM
Tripod mount kit (normally used in photography) - $9.29 https://a.co/d/eQCGtQa
Sheet of 5/8 inch plywood (used for substrate mount & removable palette)
2 inch spring clip
Additional materials/ items:
Tripod (optional)
Hammer
Smaller Philip Head Screwdriver
1/4 and 1/2 inch wood screws

I’ve used the model shown above ⬆️ in all kinds of conditions. I even dropped it in a creek and it’s been working fine despite the wear and tear.
The cradled wood panel size allows the finished palette box to fit in a simple nylon drawstring bag along with my lightweight tripod and brushes. I typically throw the drawstring bag over my shoulder on top of my backpack when I head out on a hike and paint 🎨 session.

One of the significant benefits I’ve found while using this palette box has come from pre-loading my palette before heading out on a painting session. This saves an immense amount of time.
Several potential improvements I am considering include:
Built in panel carrier
Brush holder
Latching mechanism
Carrying strap
Detachable palette 🎨

Cheers to you!
Be well!
