Plein Air Painting in the Pocono Mountains

Plein Air Painting in the Pocono Mountains: A Creative Journey into Nature While Moving Among the Trees…

The Pocono Mountains region, with its rolling hills, dense forests, mountain streams, diverse plant and animal life, sparkling lakes, and charming small towns, offers a wealth of inspiration for artists who enjoy plein air painting. Whether you're an experienced artist or just beginning to explore the joy of painting outdoors, this region's diverse landscapes provide countless opportunities to capture the beauty of nature on canvas. Here’s a guide to some of the most interesting places in the Poconos to set up your easel and let your creativity flow.

1. Bushkill Falls

Known as the "Niagara of Pennsylvania," Bushkill Falls is a must-visit for artists looking to capture the drama of cascading waterfalls surrounded by lush greenery. The network of trails provides multiple vantage points, from close-up views of the rushing water to panoramic scenes framed by trees and rocks. The interplay of light and shadow here is ideal for creating dynamic, textured paintings.

2. Lake Wallenpaupack

As one of Pennsylvania's largest lakes, Lake Wallenpaupack offers endless inspiration for landscape painters. The shimmering water reflects the sky and surrounding forest, creating a palette of ever-changing hues. In summer, sailboats and kayakers add activity and color to your composition, while fall brings stunning foliage. A sunset scene here is guaranteed to be a showstopper.

3. Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

Stretching along the border of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, the Delaware Water Gap is a haven for plein air artists. The world class hiking trails, towering cliffs, serene river views, historic structures and abundant wildlife make this area a treasure trove of inspiration. For a more intimate setting, try painting along the banks of the Delaware River, where you can capture its gentle currents and reflections. Stop off in the Delaware Water Gap borough to grab a meal (or some coffee) and an easy connection to the Appalachian Trail. You can spend weeks exploring the recreation area and still miss some of the awesome scenery available to the public. Checkout the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area website and social media for insights into the various scenes you can explore.

4. Promised Land State Park

Located in the heart of the Poconos, Promised Land State Park is a peaceful retreat with two lakes, scenic hiking trails, and dense woodlands. The park's Lower Lake is a favorite spot for artists, offering still waters that reflect the surrounding trees like a mirror. In winter, snow-covered landscapes provide a monochromatic challenge for painters who embrace cold-weather plein air sessions.

5. Hickory Run State Park

If you're drawn to painting unique geological features, head to Hickory Run State Park. Its famous Boulder Field, a National Natural Landmark, is a one-of-a-kind subject with its vast expanse of ancient rocks. For more traditional landscapes, explore the park's waterfalls, streams, and forest trails.

6. Jim Thorpe

This historic town, often called the "Switzerland of America," is a dream for artists who enjoy combining architecture and nature in their work. Jim Thorpe's Victorian-style buildings are nestled among wooded hills, creating picturesque street scenes. The Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway offers additional opportunities to paint trains winding through the lush countryside.

7. Big Pocono State Park

For sweeping vistas, visit Big Pocono State Park, located atop Camelback Mountain. The panoramic views stretch across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York, giving artists the chance to paint a vast and varied landscape. The changing seasons here offer dramatically different scenes, from verdant greens in summer to fiery reds and oranges in autumn.

8. Lehigh River Gorge

The Lehigh River Gorge is an excellent spot for artists who love dramatic water scenes. Rapids, rock formations, and dense forests make this area a dynamic subject. Visit Glen Onoko Falls (if accessible) for an even more dramatic take on the area's natural beauty.

9. Tobyhanna State Park

For a quieter, more tranquil painting experience, head to Tobyhanna State Park. The serene lake and surrounding wetlands attract an array of wildlife, making it a great location for incorporating birds or other animals into your work. Early mornings here often feature mist rising off the water, adding an ethereal quality to your composition.

10. Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm

For artists who enjoy painting historical settings, Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm offers a glimpse into rural life in the 19th century. With its rustic barns, farm animals, and costumed interpreters, this working farm is a unique subject that combines history and nature.

11. Smaller Lessor Known Green Spaces

Smaller nature conservancies dot the landscape throughout the Pocono Region. A quick internet search using key words like "Conservancy" or "Nature Preserve" will serve up many suggestions for you to explore. Many of my of my favorite green spaces are managed by "Pocono Heritage Land Trust."

12. Resort Properties

Several iconic resort properties in the region embrace the arts and offer opportunities for plain air painting. Two the come to mind based upon my limited experience include Skytop Lodge and Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort.
